Internet Governance

We recognise the importance of the international environment in shaping the development of the Internet and, fitting with our public purpose remit, we make sure we are active in this arena. This includes our involvement in international governance discussions at the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). We also work with national organisations including the Government and UK Internet Governance Forum (UK-IGF).

Internet Governance Forum

We have been involved in the IGF since its inception following a recommendation by the World Summit on the Information Society in 2005. The Forum, which is a United Nations organisation, provides a framework for governments, industry, the technology community, academia and voluntary sector to work together to discuss aspects of Internet governance. Although the IGF does not have the power to make laws or introduce change, it shapes the international agenda by raising awareness on Internet issues and by inspiring and informing decision making bodies.

The UK Internet Governance Forum

The UK-IGF is a collaborative partnership between Nominet, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, parliamentarians and other organisations that take a leading role in making the Internet a better place. In addition to working on a local level to deliver solutions and demonstrate best practice in the UK, the UK-IGF agrees on the messages and issues that should be taken to the global IGF.

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers

ICANN is a not-for-profit organisation, founded in 1998, that is responsible for coordinating the global Internet’s domain name system and ensuring its stable and secure operation. ICANN encourages stakeholders from around the world to participate in policy workshops and discussions that are held several times a year in different locations around the world. These meetings allow ICANN to develop policy through a ‘bottom-up, consensus-driven, multi-stakeholder model’.
