Nominet’s UK Domain Categorisation (UKDC) project has won the Above and Beyond Innovation category in the third annual CENTR Awards.
The CENTR Awards seek to highlight the ccTLD registries that are working to make a difference to the industry, and were held in Brussels on 3 October 2017.
The UKDC is a free service for all .UK registrars to gain actionable insights into their registrants’ domains. Designed and run by Nominet, this initiative is unique across Europe and classifies over 10 million domains, almost five times as many as the closest comparable project globally.
The service is the product of a six-month project. Nominet’s team classified a representative sample to create a data set on which to train a model, using machine learning algorithms for textual analysis. Now refined, this model is being applied to the data in Nominet’s Domain Analyser tool. It is capable of analysing 2.5 million domains a day and covers all .UK domains under management. Applying our model to this data results in high quality categorisations on up-to-date data at a domain name level.
A video explaining the project is available. Nominet’s Share with Care campaign was also shortlisted for the CENTR awards in the Greater Online Good category.
